US Presidents Timeline
A quick reference of all US presidents with their term lengths and notable facts.
While the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, we didn't have a President until the constitutional convention, which didn't happen until 1787. Grant was an 8-year president who left office in 1877. So that means we had 18 presidents in the first 90 years of presidents.
Washington of course was a 9-year president ('89-'97)
John Adams was a 4-year ('97–'01)
Jefferson was an 8-year ('09)
Madison was an 8-year ('17)
Monroe was an 8-year ('25)
John Quincy Adams was a 4-year ('29)
⚠️ Note btw both Adams only had 4-year terms, and were the ONLY presidents to have 4-year terms
Andrew Jackson was an 8-year ('37)
Van Buren was a 4-year ('41)
William Henry Harrison 0-years, 2 months ('41) (died of a cold)
John Tyler was a 4-year ('45) - took Harrison's place
James Polk was a 4-year ('49) - only sought one term and died right after he left office. Got in, did what he wanted to do, got out, and died at 53 years old, almost right after he left
Zachary Taylor was a 1-year ('50), and died in office of stomach disease
Millard Fillmore was a 3-year ('53) - took Taylor's place
Franklin Pierce was a 4-year ('57)
Buchanan was a 4-year ('61) and is blamed for the civil war
Lincoln was a 4-year ('65), though was voted in for a second term was assassinated. He was president for all of the civil war
Andrew Johnson was a 4-year ('69)
Grant was an 8-year ('77)
Hayes was a 4-year ('81)
Garfield was a 0-year ('81) who was shot to death shortly after becoming president
Arthur was a 4-year ('85) and was Garfield's VP
Cleveland was a 4-year, ('89) (actually an 8 year, but not consecutively)
Harrison was a 4-year ('93)
Cleveland was a 4-year ('97) (actually an 8 year but not consecutively)
William McKinley was a 4-year ('01) who was voted in for a second term but was assassinated
Teddy Roosevelt was an 8-year ('09) - was VP and took over for McKinley
Taft was a 4-year ('13)
Wilson was an 8-year ('21)
Harding was a 2–year ('23) who died in office and was well-liked when he died but was posthumously declared one of the worst presidents ever
Coolidge was a 6-year ('29). He took over for Harding after Harding died and was actually re-elected. Later Lyndon Johnson would do the same thing after Kennedy died
Hoover was a 4-year ('33)
FDR was a 12-year ('45) and he would have been a 16-year if he didn't die in office)
Truman was an 8-year ('53) and took over for FDR. He wasn't VP the first 3 of FDR's terms, so he got pretty lucky to slide in for the 4th
Eisenhower was an 8-year ('61)
Kennedy was a 2-year ('63)
Lyndon B Johnson was a 6-year ('69)
Nixon was a 5-year ('74) and incredibly not considered one of the worst presidents despite resigning
Ford was a 3-year who took over for Nixon ('77)
Carter was a 4-year ('81)
Reagan was an 8-year ('89)
HW Bush was a 4-year ('93)
Clinton was an 8-year ('01)
Bush was an 8-year ('09)
Obama was an 8-year ('17)
Trump was a 4-year ('21)
Biden was a 4-year ('25)
