Stenography versus Steganography

Two words that sound alike but couldn't be more different - one is about efficient communication, the other about hiding information in plain sight.

There's really nothing similar about them other than their names.

Stenography refers to the practice of shorthand writing or rapid transcription, often used to quickly record spoken words. It is commonly associated with court reporting or live transcription.

Steganography is the practice of hiding information within another medium, such as embedding a secret message inside an image, audio file, or video, so the presence of the message is concealed.

Though, they share a cosmetic similarity in that they're both concerned with information, though different aspects of information; stenography cares about the communication of information, specifically from an efficiency perspective, whereas steganography cares about information security.

So, not that you asked, but there you go!

By the way, here's an interesting podcast related to the Chinese alphabet which touches some concepts in stenography. And here's a great book on steganography.
